When Real-Debrid started filtering cached files in May 2026, a lot of users went looking for something that would not change under them again. Usenet came up in almost every forum thread. It has been running since 1980 and works in a completely different way from debrid services. Background on the Real-Debrid change: our error explainer.

How each one works

Debrid service

  1. You pay one service (LinkSnappy, AllDebrid, Premiumize and others).
  2. You paste a file host link or magnet.
  3. The service downloads it and gives you a fast HTTPS link.

Full explanation: what a debrid service is.

Usenet

  1. Provider: you pay a Usenet provider for access to its servers. The provider stores posts for a set number of days, called retention.
  2. Indexer: a search site that lists what is on Usenet and gives you an NZB file (a small file that points to the right posts).
  3. Newsreader: an app like SABnzbd or NZBGet that reads the NZB, downloads the parts from your provider and rebuilds the file.

It sounds like more work, and it is at first. Once set up, it is mostly automatic.

Pros and cons

Debrid

Pros: easiest to use, covers file hosts and torrents, one bill, works in any browser.
Cons: depends on the service’s policies (as the Real-Debrid change showed), some services limit IPs.

Usenet

Pros: separate network, very fast, many providers to choose from, mature tools.
Cons: more setup, often two bills (provider plus indexer), no file host support.

Which should you choose?

You… Choose
Want the easiest option Debrid (LinkSnappy)
Use file hosts like Rapidgator Debrid
Want something that does not hinge on one company Usenet
Want torrents and Usenet in one bill TorBox
Are comfortable installing an app like SABnzbd Usenet

Many people end up with both: a debrid account for file hosts and a Usenet provider for everything else.

Setting up Usenet in four steps

  1. Sign up with a provider and note your server address, port (usually 563 for SSL), username and password.
  2. Sign up with an indexer. Many have free tiers with limited daily searches.
  3. Install SABnzbd or NZBGet and enter your provider details.
  4. Download an NZB from the indexer and open it in your newsreader.

Use SSL always. A VPN is optional for Usenet, since the SSL connection already hides your traffic from your ISP. More on VPNs in the best VPN for P2P and downloading.

FAQ

Is Usenet better than debrid?

Neither is better for everyone. Debrid is easier and covers file hosts and torrents. Usenet takes more setup but runs on a separate network with many independent providers, so it depends less on one company’s policy.

Do I need an indexer for Usenet?

In practice, yes. The provider stores the data, and the indexer helps you find it and gives you an NZB file to download. Some indexers are free with limits, others charge a small yearly fee.

Is Usenet legal?

Yes. Usenet is a decades-old discussion and file network used for many legal purposes. Downloading copyrighted material without permission is illegal on Usenet just as anywhere else.

Do I need a VPN for Usenet?

Not usually. Connecting to your provider over SSL encrypts the traffic so your ISP cannot see what you download. A VPN adds extra privacy if you want it.

Does any debrid service include Usenet?

TorBox includes Usenet alongside torrents. Premiumize bundled Usenet in past years, but its current plan page lists only cloud storage features, so check before you buy.

Which is cheaper, Usenet or debrid?

They cost about the same per month at entry level. Usenet can cost more once you add an indexer, and less if you buy a long provider plan on discount.
